Klaviyo + n8n: flows that know things Klaviyo cannot see.
Klaviyo is the best sender in ecommerce. It is not a decision engine. Put n8n behind it and your emails can react to inventory, CRM state, support history and enrichment data, not just opens and clicks.
What Klaviyo alone cannot do
Klaviyo knows what happened inside Klaviyo and your store: viewed product, added to cart, opened, clicked, purchased. That covers a lot. It stops covering it the moment your best segmentation logic depends on something else entirely.
- Whether the item left in the cart is actually still in stock, and at what margin
- Whether this person has an open support ticket right now, in which case the discount email is a bad idea
- Whether the CRM says they are mid-negotiation on a wholesale account
- Whether the email is deliverable at all, before it damages your sender reputation
- Whether their lifetime value justifies the 20% code you are about to send everyone
The architecture that solves this is not "replace Klaviyo". It is: n8n decides, Klaviyo sends. You keep templates, consent, deliverability and reporting where your team already works, and move only the decision-making out.
How the two are wired together
A behavioural abandoned-cart flow, as an example. The same shape applies to reactivation, post-purchase and lead nurture.
Klaviyo or the store fires the trigger
A Klaviyo webhook or a store event hits an n8n endpoint the moment a cart is abandoned. n8n now has the profile, the cart contents and the timestamp.
Check stock and margin, in real time
n8n calls your store or ERP. Out of stock means suppress the email entirely and send a back-in-stock signal instead. Thin margin means no discount branch, ever.
Check the CRM and the helpdesk
If the CRM shows an open wholesale deal, or the helpdesk shows an unresolved ticket, the promotional path is skipped. Nothing burns trust faster than a 20% off email to someone waiting on a refund.
Enrich and score the profile
Lifetime value, order count, average order value, first-time versus repeat. This score decides whether they get a reminder, a soft nudge, or an actual incentive, instead of everyone getting the same code.
Write the decision back as a Klaviyo event
n8n pushes a custom metric with the computed properties (recommended tier, discount eligibility, cart value band) onto the Klaviyo profile. All the intelligence is now visible inside Klaviyo.
Klaviyo flows take over and send
Your existing flows listen for the custom metric and branch on the properties n8n set. Copy, timing, templates and A/B tests stay in the tool your marketer knows, using data it could never have computed.
Suppress and clean continuously
A scheduled workflow validates new profiles, suppresses hard bounces and role addresses, and syncs unsubscribes back to the CRM so consent is consistent in both systems.
Log every decision
Each run writes what it decided and why to a store you can query. When someone asks why a customer did not get the email, there is an answer instead of a shrug.
The other flows worth wiring this way
Reactivation based on real data
Instead of "no purchase in 90 days, send discount", n8n can check whether the customer's usual product is back in stock, whether they had a bad support experience, and what they actually bought before, then set a Klaviyo property so the flow sends a relevant reason to return rather than a generic voucher.
Post-purchase that reflects reality
Shipping delayed? n8n reads the carrier status and suppresses the review request, sending an honest delay notice instead. Review requests that arrive before the parcel does are a well-known way to earn three stars.
Lead capture into email and CRM at once
One intake workflow writes to both Klaviyo and the CRM in the same run, with the same normalized data and the same source attribution, the same discipline described on the n8n and HubSpot integration page.
Practical notes
- Rate limits are per endpoint. Klaviyo's API limits differ between profile, event and campaign endpoints; the current values are documented in the Klaviyo API rate limits reference. Bulk backfills need batching and waits.
- Custom metrics beat list juggling. Adding and removing profiles from lists to drive logic gets messy and is hard to debug. Fire a custom event with properties instead.
- Consent is not a nice-to-have. Under GDPR, a profile written by an automation still needs a lawful basis. Store consent state and timestamp as properties and make every promotional branch check them.
- Never let n8n send the marketing email. Deliverability, unsubscribe handling and reporting live in Klaviyo. Sending around it is how you end up in spam with no audit trail.
What handover looks like
You get the workflows on your own n8n instance, the JSON in a repository, a written map of every event and property the automation writes into Klaviyo, and a monitored first week of live runs. Project-based pricing, no retainer, and your marketing team keeps working in Klaviyo exactly as before, with better data underneath.
Klaviyo and n8n, answered
Does n8n have a Klaviyo node?
Yes. n8n includes a Klaviyo node for profiles, events, lists and campaigns, plus a Klaviyo Trigger. For newer endpoints or anything the node has not caught up with, an authenticated HTTP Request node against the Klaviyo API works fine.
Why use n8n when Klaviyo already has flows?
Klaviyo flows are excellent at sending email and SMS. They are not designed to reach outside Klaviyo, enrich a profile from a third-party API, check inventory, read your CRM, or make a decision based on data Klaviyo has never seen. n8n does the thinking, Klaviyo does the sending.
Can n8n trigger a Klaviyo flow?
Yes, and this is the cleanest architecture. n8n pushes a custom metric event or a profile property change into Klaviyo, and a Klaviyo flow listens for it. You keep all the send logic, templates and deliverability inside Klaviyo where it belongs.
How do you sync Klaviyo with a CRM?
Bidirectionally, with one side as the source of truth per field. Typically the CRM owns deal and account data while Klaviyo owns consent and engagement, and n8n keeps the shared fields aligned on a schedule or on webhook events.
Will this affect email deliverability or consent?
It should improve both. Because n8n can suppress profiles that fail validation or lack a lawful basis before they ever reach a list, you stop mailing addresses that damage your sender reputation. Consent state must be written and respected as a profile property, never bypassed.
What does an ecommerce automation build like this cost?
Project-based, not a retainer. A single flow such as behavioural abandoned-cart enrichment is a few days. A full setup with CRM sync, enrichment, suppression logic and reactivation is usually one to two weeks of build and testing.
